A good climate pays off

A pleasant room climate and plenty of daylight make for an agreeable atmosphere at the workplace, one where employees feel at ease. That has a positive effect on their performance and well-being, both in factory units and offices. Even for machines, the right room temperature may be crucial for proper functioning.

Light domes offer the advantage of providing rooms with the required amount of light. They usually take the form of systems with an inner and outer skin, and an air gap in between. However, if made exclusively from conventional acrylic, they have the disadvantage of letting in heat together with sunlight. This results in excessive heat buildup in rooms, which can only be offset by the intensive use of air conditioning units. These are very energy-intensive and are therefore harmful for the global climate. An efficient heat shield can solve this problem and improves the climate. This is noticeable at the workplace, calculable in terms of lower air-conditioning costs, and environmentally friendly due to lower carbon emissions.  

Thrifty thinking

With the right roofing material, rooms heat up much less. The infrared (IR) portion of the solar spectrum is responsible for heat development. Double-skin light dome elements made from PLEXIGLAS HEATSTOP® XT reflect over 68 percent of IR radiation.
The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) has examined the influence of various types of roof glazing units on a typical industrial building’s interior heat buildup and brightness. ISE’s study compared PLEXIGLAS HEATSTOP® with different combinations of double acrylic-glass panels. 

The study’s findings can be summarized easily: roof glazing units with PLEXIGLAS HEATSTOP® reduce cooling-energy consumption in typical industrial buildings. This can result in cooling-energy savings of 15 to 30 percent in climatic zones such as the Mediterranean — and in even warmer climates. All told, PLEXIGLAS HEATSTOP® offers an energy-saving potential in every climatic zone.

More specifically — and regarding Central Europe’s climate (on Brussels’ parallel) — a glazing with PLEXIGLAS HEATSTOP® is particularly suitable for industrial buildings in which a lot of waste heat is generated during production processes. Waste heat namely compensates very well for heat lost via glazing in winter, thus reducing heating-energy consumption. Conversely, summers necessitate exceptional cooling. And PLEXIGLAS HEATSTOP® glazing reduces the solar yield for lower cooling-energy consumption.

Cooling-energy savings as high as 30 percent are possible in Central Europe’s climate. And in warmer climates, roof glazing with PLEXIGLAS HEATSTOP® offers truly remarkable energy benefits. In fact, roof glazing with PLEXIGLAS HEATSTOP® can considerably reduce energy consumption for cooling by up to 20 percent in such climatic zones. Moreover, the consumption of energy for heating in winter is obviated altogether in these climates.
